Ubisoft pulled back the curtain today on AC Black Flag Resynced — a ground-up remake of the beloved 2013 pirate adventure, rebuilt in the Anvil Engine with ray tracing, reworked missions, and Matt Ryan returning as Edward Kenway. Launches July 9.
Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced Is Official — July 9 Release, Ray Tracing, and Edward Kenway Is Back
It was, as GameRant put it, "gaming's worst kept secret." But secrets — even badly kept ones — deserve a proper reveal. Today, Ubisoft held a dedicated showcase for Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced, confirming what the leaks, rating board listings, and collector's edition pre-orders had all been pointing toward for months: the beloved 2013 pirate adventure is coming back, rebuilt from the ground up, and launching on July 9, 2026 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
What Is Resynced, Exactly?
This is not a remaster. Ubisoft Singapore, working alongside Belgrade and Bordeaux studios, has rebuilt Black Flag from scratch using the latest version of the Anvil Engine — the same engine powering recent Assassin's Creed titles. The result is a game that looks, feels, and plays differently from the 2013 original while preserving the story, characters, and open-world Caribbean setting that made it one of the franchise's most beloved entries.
The technical showcase is substantial. Ray tracing is confirmed alongside Dolby Atmos, a completely dynamic weather system with winds and waves, violent storms and serene sunrises, and what Ubisoft describes as "seamless environments" — meaning no loading screen when you dock your ship and transition from the Jackdaw to land. One of the most consistently praised aspects of the original Black Flag was the feeling of being a pirate captain sailing the Caribbean; Resynced is specifically designed to make that transition between sea and shore as fluid as possible.
What's New and What's Changed
The showcase confirmed a list of gameplay upgrades that go well beyond visual polish:
Tailing missions reworked. One of the most reliably frustrating mechanics in the original is gone in its old form. In Resynced, getting spotted during a tailing mission no longer automatically desynchronizes you — you can still complete the mission after being seen, removing the instant-fail frustration that broke many playthroughs.
Observe Mode added. A new context-sensitive scan that lets Edward assess his environment and identify quest objectives, clues, and tagged enemies from a distance. Similar in spirit to the detective vision systems in more recent AC titles.
Ziplines added throughout cities. Edward can now quickly descend from high rooftops via ziplines scattered across urban environments, improving traversal flow.
Naval combat expanded. Ubisoft Singapore has fully revamped sea combat. Secondary weapons have been added to the Jackdaw. Enemy ships now have factional alliances that affect their loadouts and behaviour. A new pet companion joins you on voyages. Three new officers can be recruited through dedicated side quests, adding crew members with unique abilities.
New missions and scenes. Ubisoft confirmed that additional content featuring Matt Ryan — reprising his role as Edward Kenway — has been added to the game. Specific details are embargoed, but this isn't just a cosmetic addition; new story moments are woven into the campaign.
What's NOT in Resynced
This is important: Ubisoft confirmed that Resynced will not include the original DLC or multiplayer. The game is specifically being positioned as "a pure story-driven adventure" focused entirely on Edward's campaign. The notorious multiplayer mode from the original — which had a genuinely dedicated fanbase — will not return in any form.
Pre-release rumours suggested Resynced would shift toward RPG-style mechanics (loot, stats, inventory systems like Odyssey or Valhalla). The showcase confirmed this is not the case. Combat is action-forward but the progression doesn't include gear-score stat systems. Ubisoft was explicit about this.

The Bigger Picture
Black Flag Resynced is the first confirmation in what Ubisoft describes as a broader reinvestment in the franchise's classic era. A separate report this week noted that another Assassin's Creed remake is reportedly in development beyond Resynced — though no details have been confirmed on which entry that covers.
For fans who have been waiting since 2013 to revisit the Caribbean with modern hardware behind them, July 9 is the date. Pre-orders are live now on all platforms.
